It's never too late in the season for a good goalie controversy. After putting up back-to-back stinkers in Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup final should the Vancouver Canucks' Roberto Luongo be headed for the bench in their next NHL betting matchup on Friday?
Alain Vigneault doesn't seem to think so, but sports radio hosts and web columnists will at least ponder the idea of starting backup Cory Schneider when the team heads home to host the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of the Cup final.
Luongo gave up eight goals in an 8-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 3 on Monday night, and followed up that performance by surrendering four more goals through two-plus periods in a 4-0 loss in Game 4 on Wednesday night.
That was all for Luongo on Wednesday, as Schneider stopped all nine shots he faced in relief in the last 15 minutes of the game. Schneider had last played in the first round of the playoffs against the Blackhawks.
It was a different story at the other end of the ice on Wednesday, as Tim Thomas stopped all 37 shots he faced as the Bruins tied up the best-of-seven series at two games apiece.
Rich Peverley scored twice for Boston in the Game 4 victory, while Michael Ryder and Brad Marchand had one goal apiece. Rookie forward Tyler Seguin, back in the lineup because of the injury to Nathan Horton, contributed an assist on Ryder's marker.
Boston won as a -130 favorite on the Bodog Sportsbook NHL odds board on Wednesday. If you bet on Vancouver to win the series prior to Game 4 you would've had to settle for a -350 line, with Boston at +275 on the series odds before puck drop that night.
For Game 5, the Canucks are -175 home favorites, with the Bruins +155 road underdogs.
