That’s right, just a few weeks ago many thought that Boise and Utah would be playing in a BCS bowl game, but instead find themselves heading to Las Vegas this holiday season. Still, this is one of the premiere matchups in all the Bowl Game Odds.
Let’s start with Boise, because simply put they’re a juggernaut.
They’ll be led onto the field by their superstar quarterback, Kellen Moore. The junior had another banner season, and did enough to earn him a trip to New York for this year’s Heisman Trophy presentation. On the season, Moore threw for 3,506 yards and 33 touchdowns, with an insane 71 percent completion percentage.
Of course Moore is hardly alone on this awesome Boise team. He’s got two elite receivers in Austin Pettis and Titus Young, a pair which combined for just a shade under 2,000 yards receiving as well as 18 touchdowns. Meanwhile Doug Martin finished with 1,100 yards rushing. Is it any wonder why this team finished averaging 46 points per game?
But that’s not to say that Utah won’t play the Broncos tough, and can’t pull off a Bowl Game Odds upset.
It appears as though Utah will be without quarterback Jordan Wynn, which only means that backup Terrance Cain will be starting. In limited time Cain did complete 70 percent of his passes, and tossed for six touchdowns.
It will certainly help that he’s got assistance from two of the Mountain West’s best running backs, Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata. Each rushed for 600 yards on the season, and combined for 19 touchdowns.
But really, it’s the Utah defense that needs to the story here. Expect them to do enough to keep the Bowl Game Odds close.
We’re not saying that Boise State is going to lose this game, because honestly, they won’t. At the same time, doesn’t 17 points seem like a lot for Utah to be getting, especially since at one point they were 8-0 and ranked in the top five?
But back to that defense. The Utes weren’t great down the stretch, but with a month to prepare, should be able to keep Boise relatively in check. For all the points the Broncos have put up in the regular season, remember, they’ve put up just 33 combined in their last two bowl games. Good for many teams, just not Boise.
Simply put, the Broncos will do this game, but with an underrated defense, Utah will do enough to cover the Bowl Game Odds. Take the Utes here!
